Ways to support patients
Eating is a basic need, but for sick or frail elderly people, eating can pose many risks. An improper posture, a spoonful of food too quickly, or a lack of attention can cause the patient to cough, choke, or become more tired.
When meal supportThe caregiver should prepare a tidy space and check the patient's sitting or semi-lying position as instructed by family members or healthcare professionals. The patient should not be allowed to eat if they are overly tired, sleepy, or exhibiting symptoms such as shortness of breath, excessive coughing, or lethargy. If any unusual signs appear, the responsible person should be notified before continuing.
During feeding, do so slowly, in small amounts, and observe the patient's swallowing reaction. Do not rush, scold, or play with the patient while they are swallowing. If the patient coughs, chokes, changes color, has difficulty breathing, or is unable to swallow, the caregiver should not attempt to treat the situation on their own but must immediately notify a family member or medical professional.
Non-medical caregivers do not advise on therapeutic nutrition, do not change medical diets, and do not decide what foods a patient can or cannot eat in cases of specific medical conditions. Their proper role is to provide support according to existing guidelines, observe, and report.
